ABOUT US

The Plant, founded in 1969, is Dawson’s only student-run newspaper. We are a platform for students to share their writing, platform their voices, and gain experience in the field of journalism.

The Plant became incorporated as a Non-Profit Organization in November 2025. This means that The Plant is completely separated from the Dawson Student Union, Dawson College, and that its writers are protected under the organization. This allows us to practice ethical, and factual journalism, without censorship. Students pay a fee levy, as of Winter 2026, of $0.70 (part-time) and $1.30 (full-time) that directly funds The Plant.

We print 4 issues a semester throughout the Winter and Fall semesters. Dawson students may contribute to The Plant and understand how to do so by consulting the “Contribute” tab.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us by email at theplantnewspaper@gmail.com or on Instagram @theplantdawson. **Our bylaws are available upon request at theplantexecs@gmail.com.

EXECUTIVE TEAM (UPDATING)

MINOLA GRENT (she/her)

JACKIE GRAIF

(they/she)

Editors-in-Chief

Minola is a second year Law, Society and Justice student with a love for media analysis (yes, the thing from English class), volleyball, and daydreaming. She can be found in the wild looking for a warm place to work because even with three layers and a winter coat, she is always cold. For that same reason, she prefers summer and will not hear from winter lovers (her best friend is one). When she isn’t getting distracted by 3h long video essays on Youtube, she should be catching up on her class readings, but where’s the fun in that? She hopes to go to law school and pursue legal journalism while working on a few books and scripts on the side. Her favourite movie is The Martian and her very predictable music taste includes Hannah Bahng, Conan Gray, Laufey, and Maneskin.

Jackie is in her last semester of Liberal Arts and is one of the Editors-in-Chief for the Winter 2026 semester! She spends most of her time working on The Plant affairs, and sometimes hides in the office to drink coffee and do her actual homework. She loves to read, listen to music, and watch TV to wind-down. She’s hoping to study journalism in University, and possibly minor in theatre. She made her start at The Plant as the first Arts & Culture Correspondent, and then took on the position of Voices Editor before becoming Editor-in-Chief. She loves the community The Plant brings and is so grateful for her found family. Her goal is to create a nurturing, open environment that fosters thought, collaboration, and creativity!
S/o Minola for being an incredible partner:)

CHLOE BERCOVITZ

 (she/her)
Managing Editor

Studying Liberal Arts in her second semester, Chloe could not be more grateful to be stepping into the role of Managing Editor. She owes her life to her friends and good music, and can oftentimes be found at the thrift digging for CDs. She will gladly make you a playlist upon request, heavy on Amy Winehouse, The Sundays, Jeff Buckley, Fiona Apple, or Nina Simone. Assuming that the library has already been checked, you’ll otherwise find Chloe on the floor of her room, creating something. Too ambitious for her own good, her biggest mistake might have just been discovering coffee in the sixth grade. And her life’s dream is to become a public interest lawyer so that she can live in the same world she writes about. Until then, refusing to let her four years of debate experience be rendered obsolete, Chloe will never cease to talk politics and doesn’t plan on beating her angry feminist allegations anytime soon.

ORION PEYROL

 (she/her)
Managing Editor

“Hiiii I’m Orion! I’m a first year Arts and Cultures student and studying to be an English teacher. I moved to Montreal four years ago and spent the majority of my life in Texas (yeehaw). I’m a huge media nerd (or really just a nerd in general) and you can always hear me talk loudly about my latest obsession or niche research rabbithole to my friends. I’ve always loved writing and I love this team and their amazing work. I hope to both learn from and bring something to this magnificent paper throughout my time here. I look forward to a wonderful semester together!!”

CATHY WANG (she/her)
Digital Managing Editor

PRINT TEAM

NADIRA ZIBIROV (she/her)
Copy Editor

Nadira is in her second year of Health Science. As a Copy Editor for The Plant newspaper, she is really excited to be part of such a creative space. She loves learning random facts about anything, especially if it’s related to medicine and art, and The Plant feels like the perfect place to expand her knowledge. In the future, Nadira wishes to pursue a career in healthcare. Outside of academics, she enjoys volunteering at the hospital, playing the piano, and binge-watching crime shows. She has also recently gotten into painting, inspired by her favourite artist, Claude Monet. Nadira is really looking forward to editing for The Plant this year and collaborating with such passionate people!

SABRINA COCCIMIGLIO (she/her)
Copy Editor

“Hey! I’m Sabrina, a 1st-year Liberal Arts student and Copy Editor on the Plant. I’ve always had a passion for reading and writing since childhood. Which, luckily, has led me here, surrounded by an amazing team of talented writers on the Plant. When I have free time away from school, I am usually journaling, scrapbooking, working on miscellaneous crafts, or reading an interesting book I’ve picked up. My favorite part of the day is choosing my nighttime CD, they’re usually variety of genres from things like Snoopy’s Christmas playlist or artists like Simon and Garfunkel, Selena and Kacey Musgraves. I am also in my yoga and pilates phase right now, where workout classes are actually my weekly joy. Sadly for my wallet, I have a blind box addiction and love collecting figures like Smiskis and Nyotas to bring me a small happiness during stressful times. I look forward to and I am so excited for what’s to come to the Plant this semester!”

ATIKA UME FAZAL

(she/her)
News Editor

Atika is a first year Law, Society, and Justice student that finds herself being the News Editor for this semester. Her passions are all over the place and very often ephemeral but the things that follow her everywhere are her thirst for knowledge and her wish to travel the world. She loves learning about cultures, history, politics, languages, and art, even more when it is all combined. When she isn’t doomscrolling on her phone (I’m trying to get better I swear), you will catch her hanging out and socializing with fellow students or catching up on her many interests. Her favourite genre of films are coming of age movies and she’s currently on a mission to catch up with all the classics so she can be a true performative film bro (though her Letterboxd is dryer than the Sahara). Atika isn’t entirely sure what she wishes to do in the future but she is certain she wants to leave a positive impact, which, along with her interest in reading and writing, brought her to The Plant.

MAYA JABBARI (she/her)
Voices Editor

Studying Arts and Culture in her fourth semester, Maya, a Capricorn, is ambitious and sociable. She loves writing, reading non-fiction, rewatching her comfort films, and baking for her loved ones!! In her opinion, her biggest self-defining trait is her love for music, which she listens to at every chance she gets. Artists that have been on repeat for her lately are Wet Leg, Veruca Salt, Slow Pulp, The Tragically Hip, and Bon Iver. Outside of Dawson, her comfort place is truly her room, which she has decorated to look like an extension of herself, with her posters, polaroids, and little belongings she’s collected over time. You’ll probably find her in the caf reading, talking with friends, or grabbing a coffee!!

NICOLE F. MOTTA

(she/her)
Arts & Culture Editor

Nicole is wrapping up her final semester at Dawson. Having always loved the art of writing, Nicole focused more on creative pieces pre-Plant, but becoming a part of its ambitious and passionate team bloomed in her a new appreciation for the craft of journalism. Most days, she can be found at rowing practice, studying at Aunja Café, or spending time in the great outdoors. Ultimately, Nicole can always be found doing something (she can be convinced to do pretty much anything and has a fear of not trying every hobby at least once).

JOSÉPHINE SAVARD

(she/her)
Arts & Culture Correspondent

In her last semester as a Law, Society and Justice student (FINALLY), Joséphine is indulging the artist whispering in the back of her mind. You’ll find her around campus, either being tugged every which way at an improvisation match, scouting posters on her quest to find a pitch for her next Arts and Culture article or going on silly craft missions with her friends…or, maybe she’s hidden somewhere resting from all the running around. If ever she disappears, follow the ball of knitting yarn, sniff around for the scent of earl grey, listen out for the jazz music, and you’ll find her somewhere between needle blisters and saxophones. With her articles, she hopes to bring Montréal’s bustling cultural scene closer to the student population, proving that there’s something for everyone: the indie cinema enthusiasts, the overbooked Model U.N. delegates, the aspiring politicians and yes, even the abstract art sceptics (because no, it’s not just a regular old blue canvas). If you manage to catch her, go up and talk to her, she loves disproportionately intense discussions about tout et n’importe quoi!

MARTIN KALOSHI (he/him)
Science & Environment Editor

A first-year Health Science student, Martin likes to put his lab coat away every once in a while to write, swim, or go on impossibly long walks around Montreal, his recent home of three years. Raised between Albania and Canada, he has always found special enjoyment in understanding the different worldviews around him and learning foreign languages, AKA, impressing his friends with words in their native tongue. When he’s not vicariously living life in all corners of the globe on his hourly Google Maps scroll, he’s probably daydreaming about the beach — or, as of now, thinking all about Science and our world as he buckles up for his next expedition: the Plant.

MARISSA HODGSON

(she/her)
Sports Editor

“My name is Marissa Hodgson, and I’m a second-year Arts and Culture student with a passion for journalism. I’ve known from a young age that I wanted to be a journalist, and more recently I’ve discovered a passion for sports journalism in particular. Writing has always been at the centre of my interests, and I’m excited to continue developing my skills and voice. Outside of school, music is a huge part of my life ,I’m a big Swiftie, but I enjoy many genres. I’m excited to learn and contribute at The Plant.”

SAL FRANCIS

(he/him)
Creative Writing Editor

“Hi! I’m Sal, the Creative Writing Editor of The Plant. I’m a second semester Literature student and as you can probably guess, I love reading and writing. I love all things weird, creepy, and uncanny, which reflects a lot in what I write and consume. I usually spend my time writing poetry or taking quizzes that tell me which MLP pony I am (Rarity of course). Nothing makes me happier than interacting with other people’s writing and getting to talk about it with them. Seeing people get excited about writing is the quickest thing to make me excited, and the reason why I joined The Plant! I’m looking forward to this semester! :)”

DARIA GLADCHII

(she/her)
Curiosities Editor

Daria, an artist of many interests and talents, is a second year Cincom student. She’s an avid fanatic of animated media and Korean cinema. She can not spend a second in silence so she either plays music, watches YouTube or listens to a podcast. Daria is always down for an outing even if she complains about being broke. “A big part about being young is spending more and sleeping less!”, is what she tells herself every morning.

SIMONE MUDIE
(she/her)
Visual Arts Editor

Simone is so excited to be part of The Plant as the Visual Arts editor! Currently in her last semester of Liberal Arts, she loves the arts, history, political science, literature, and simply stuffing her brain with facts about humanity (she is more than willing to have a conversation about Marxism, women and gender theory or any topic you are willing to give her two hour to scour Jstor for). Her favourite places in Montréal is no doubt the Musée des Beaux Arts or literally any park where she can read or draw with her music and treat during summer. Simone dreams of one day working in a museum (maybe in Europe, who knows) and of being able to share art and history with all! This is why she plans on continuing her studies in anthropology and art history. Simone’s favourite thing in life is finding happiness in the smallest things, like a bug on a leaf or aesthetic-looking trash with a sun beam, and taking pictures of them.

ORLA JEANES (she/her)
Staff Writer

In the midst of her time as a Liberal Arts’ student at Dawson, Orla sought out an exciting new opportunity as a Staff Writer at The Plant! As a lover of reading, writing, and her beloved New Yorker subscription, she eagerly awaits what the world of journalism has in store for her. Other favourite pastimes and interests of hers include collecting post cards, scrapbooking, live music, and participating in a never ending cycle of learning and not-learning guitar. Although already more stressed than she ought to be about her piles and piles of schoolwork, she cannot wait to be a member of this team. While her alter ego would have become a starving novelist, she hopes to pursue a career in International Relations, a dream that is fueled both by her desire to advocate for justice and a strong wish to live abroad. Hopefully, in twenty years time, she’ll be living in some hip Berlin neighbourhood or a small Dublin apartment.

ELSIE DUQUE (she/her)
Staff Writer

As a first-year Social Sciences student, Elsie is driven by an insatiable need to taste everything the world is willing to offer. From ambiguous grocery-aisle cans with labels that raise more questions than answers, to carefully composed emulsifications, the aspiring food columnist approaches eating as a means of connection and a subject of study. If you ever need a culinary recommendation—she’s your girl.

When she’s not contemplating eccentric food pairings, Elsie can usually be found tormenting local record stores. From punk to new wave (with the occasional dip into nu-metal), she is a passionate student of sound. Inspired by her background in percussion, the young writer especially enjoys dissecting rhythms and chords, often attempting to identify the BPM of a song no one asked her to analyze.

ALAA ETTAOUTH (she/her)
Staff Writer

If Alaa had to choose one world to describe herself, she would say that she is versatile. You’ll surely find her sitting at a nearby coffee drinking her thermos filled to the brim with atay or at the library, juggling between writing her next article in French or in English, catching up on the latest score of FC Barcelona as well as logging her latest atrocious watch on Letterboxd. As she is starting her second semester in the Law, Society and Justice profile, a program where she finally has the space to talk about her political or sociological analysis of the latest news, she will eternally be grateful to her fourth grade teacher for introducing little her to the universe of literature and politics. Following this path, Alaa now spends her free time competing in Génie en Herbe with her amazing team every two Saturday of the month in addition to debating world events in Model UN. To wind down from this excruciating life, she enjoys music (also because it keeps her company during her long 1h30 commute to the College) such as SZA, PinkPantheress, Clairo, Theodora and Tyler the Creator, but also NewJeans, TWICE, CORTIS and ILLIT! (PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I HAVE ANY PUNCTUATION MISTAKES TYYY)

JIANE KEIZHA PAU (she/her)
Graphic Designer

“G’day readers! My name is Jiane and I’m a second year Arts and Culture student. I’m really psyched to be a part of this team of inspiring and passionate creatives. One thing about me is that I love a good challenge. Whatever the result, I think it’s essential to personal growth. In other words, I’m always up for a random sidequest and seeing where the wind takes me, even if it’s a scary place. In my free time, I enjoy crocheting, doing other annoyingly tedious DIYs, producing digital media, and evaluating the political and economic state of the world (queue the Jayden Smith video).

I can’t wait to bring you a nicely formatted issue every month! Happy reading 🤗🤓”

Alexander Solovyev (he/him)
Cover Artist

“Hey! I’m Alex. I’m an illustration student, and the co-cover artist for the Plant. I have already illustrated two books: a series of short stories by Andrei Ladoga, and the cover for “Nourrir l’ogre” by Isabel Lapointe. I’ve taken a lot of art classes and am really grateful to every art teacher who got me here. I really enjoy learning everything about tea and coffee, and the research process in general. I often get lost in the night sky, wishing I were flying up there. I am really inspired by Hayao Miyazaki, Shinichi Sakamoto, Takehiko Inoue and Toulouse-Lautrec. The music I listen to right now are the artists Ichiko Aoba, Lamp, Nujabes, Hozier and Arcade Fire. I try to be kind above all. Glad to be part of the team and to be able to share my art, so everyone can hold it in their hands.”

MARRIE HAN (they/them)
Cartoonist

Marrie is a 3rd year illustration student with an interest in the possibilities of biology. When not pressured by the college’s workload, they like to doomscroll on twitter and polish the script of their lesbian fiction story.

YASMINE BOUANANI (she/her)
Secretary

Yasmine is a devoted lover of stories, constantly drawn to the magic of words and the worlds they create. Whether through literature, film, or lived experience, she thrives on narratives that challenge, inspire, and reveal the human spirit. A people-person, she thrives on connection, long conversations with friends, spontaneous encounters with strangers, or quiet companionship with her cat. Her jokes are lame and her coffee sickeningly sweet but do say hi to her when you cross paths, she’d love nothing less!

DIGITAL TEAM (STILL UPDATING)

ROMANE RANDRIA (she/her)
Social Media Manager

“My name is Romane and I’m so happy to be back for my second and final semester at the plant ! I love multimedia projects but never really find the motivation to start them on my own so being surrounded by people who do art is so so very helpful. I like a lot of things I’m not really sure how to introduce so I’ll just list them. Green things, fishes, snow (in theory), french rap, guitar, painting, sculpting, photography… If you ever need help for any sort of creative project, hmu. I’m serious.”

IMOGEN PRINCE (they/them)
Reporter/Video Content Writer

Imogen’s a third year Pure and Applied Science student and a second year Plant reporter!! They love researching and creating videos for the Plant because it provides them with a deeper appreciation for journalism. Imogen loves to blend the arts with science and tries to incorporate it in everything they do. When they’re not locking in for assignments, they’re working on a new craft project, adding movies to their Letterboxd, and listening to way too much music. You can find them running to their 8 a.m. labs, searching for new study spots, or working on a new script in the Plant office.

Evelyn Fleming (she/her)
Reporter/Video Content Writer

Evelyn has been part of the Plant for two years, and has covered all kinds of stories, from interviews with prominent local activists to a three-part series on nightlife in Montreal. She always puts all of her passion for culture, art, social justice, and community into everything she makes and does. In her free time, she likes to play video games or tabletop games, go for walks, watch TV, films and video essays, listen to music of all sorts of genres, spend time just chilling with her friends, and going out to her favorite queer bars and punk venues.

FERIEL BEN MAHMOUD (she/her)
Reporter/Video Content Writer

Feriel is a second-year student in LSJ with a strong passion for law and a determination to denounce injustice wherever she finds it. She views writing, theatre, and journalism as powerful means of exposing inequities and sparking necessary conversations. One of her key artistic inspirations is the Egyptian play Raya w Sakina, which she admires for the way it portrays the intersection of gender, oppression, and crime while revealing deeper truths about society. Driven and outspoken, Feriel often steers discussions toward questions of women’s rights, human rights, and social equity- subjects that shape both her personal identity and professional aspirations. Serious about her commitments yet warm in spirit, she balances her sharp outlook with a well-known sweet tooth.

EMMA VIGANI (she/her)
Reporter/Video Content Writer

“Hey, I’m Emma! Im a first year social science student and i’m thrilled to be starting my first semester as a reporter at The Plant! 🙂 I love collecting CDs/records, thrifting, painting and checking out new coffee shops around campus. I’ve got a weird hidden talent for Sudoku, and I’m kind of obsessed with random history facts (the weirder, the better.) My all time favorite movie is Dazed and Confused and I don’t think il ever get enough of rewatching That ’70s Show or Twin Peaks. Lastly, my music taste is a little all over the place but I love bands like Rush, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Stone Temple Pilots, and Soundgarden :)”

EMMA OCHOA (she/her)
Videographer

Emma’s cat, Cherry, can testify to how much time she spends watching movies and reading books (especially historical fictions). As a 2nd year in ALC Cin-com, she practices photography in her spare time and listens to loads of music, such as Clairo, Lucy Dacus, Twice, Rawayana, and many more. Emma is very passionate about all things creative, she loves to work with her hands!

ANTOINE ARCHAMBEAULT (he/him)
Videographer

“You don’t know me lil bro.”

LAURINE ALINOT (she/her)
Videographer

Laurine is a second-year Cinema & Communications student with a passion for the arts, and a particular love for cinema. Inspired by all the directors that came before her, she seeks to become a film director and actually won the Best Directing Award at her High School’s Film Festival. Currently, she is in the process of writing and directing several short films in different styles and genres as a way to explore and develop her creative voice as a filmmaker. She aims to complete a few of them in the near future. As an avid moviegoer she loves spending time on Letterboxd and in movie theatres, with a goal of watching one movie a day this year.

JUSTIN BOURQUE-MELOCHE (he/him)
Video Editor

I’m a second year cinema/communications student whose love for cinema and filmmaking started when I was 13 and has only grown stronger. I’m often at my favourite library: the BanQ, either editing a video or flipping through the rental DVDs and finding a way to jam 20 of them in my backpack. As a big supporter of physical media, I’m slowly growing my DVD collection of films I love. Strongly inspired by the works of Stanley Kubrick, I want to pursue a career in filmmaking, where I hope to become a cinematographer.

LIANA ALACCHI
(she/her)
Video Editor

Liana is a second-year psychology student. She has many hobbies such as creating art, playing and listening to music, editing videos and watching films and TV shows. She always has her digital camera with her and has a passion for taking pictures of everything. Her favourite artists are Poppy, Lady Gaga, Spiritbox and Twice. You can usually find her at a cafe or at a concert. A fun fact about Liana is that she can play bass guitar and would love to be part of a band someday.

ANGEL DIAMOND
(she/her)
Video Editor

« Chasing facts. Amplifying voices. » and then underneath, it can be « independent student journalism since [year]. »

“I think making it short and sweet is better than having a full sentence/paragraph in the bio because it is more easier for the viewers to understand what the account is about. For example, I manage a social media account with my friends, and when we had a long caption in our bio, we did not get much engagement on our page. The moment we changed it to something shorter, our page was was being pushed into the algorithm. It might not be the only factor that might have helped with the boost, but it still made a big difference (I would also like to say that every account is different, this is just my personal experience). Making it short, simple and straight to the point is very good step to take, especially when our generation has a short attention span (I am speaking in general but we are not all like that lol).”

SAADULDEEN “Saad”
Al-ADHAMY

(he/him)
Digital Staff Member

As a second-year Social Sciences student, Saad is honoured to join The Plant’s digital team. When not navigating the halls on his scooter, he can be found watching highlights from last night’s games or staying up to date with campus events and student life. A devoted music fan, Saad is most often listening to rap and hip-hop. Originally from Iraq, he has spent most of his life in Montreal. He takes pride in his Middle Eastern heritage, enjoying his homeland’s cuisine and keeping informed about events in the region. After completing his studies at Dawson, Saad hopes to move to Toronto to study Sports Media at TMU, where he aims to pursue his dream of becoming a sports reporter. Beyond sports, he occasionally enjoys drawing, reading articles on global affairs, and watching films. Saad is also passionate about making student journalism more accessible to others.
